  9.      BACKGROUND
  10.      
  11.      When SDEFRAG detects a media error on your disk, it displays an
  12.      error message and provides brief instructions on how to correct
  13.      the media error.  This document provides in-depth procedures for
  14.      correcting the following SDEFRAG errors:
  15.      
  16.                  
  17.       Error              Description
  18.      +-----------------------------------------------------------------+
  19.      |  109/110   |      SDEFRAG is unable to read, write, or verify a |
  20.      |            |      physical cluster on the hard disk.  This is   |
  21.      |    170     |      usually caused by a media error.              |
  22.      |------------+----------------------------------------------------|
  23.      |            |      SDEFRAG is unable to decompress a physical    |
  24.      |    120     |      cluster.  This is either caused by a media    |
  25.      |            |      error or corrupted cluster written to the     |
  26.      |            |      Stacker drive.                                |

  29.      This document is organized into two procedures.  Procedure I
  30.      remedies SDEFRAG errors that warrant a surface scan utility.
  31.      Complete this procedure first.  If the SDEFRAG error persists,
  32.      then complete Procedure II.
  33.      
  34.      PROCEDURE I:  USING SURFACE SCAN UTILITIES WITH STACKER
  35.      
  36.      If a physical hard drive flaw (bad sector) affects the operation
  37.      of your Stacker drive, then a disk repair utility can be used to
  38.      detect the damaged areas and correct them.  This procedure
  39.      explains how to use a disk repair utility to scan and repair hard
  40.      drive flaws in conjunction with Stacker.  Norton Utilities 
  41.      Calibrate, PC Tools DiskFix, and SpinRite are examples of disk
  42.      surface scan utilities.
  43.      
  44.      SOLUTION
  45.      
  46.      To correct physical disk flaws that affect Stacker:
  47.        Ensure that a file attribute utility is available
  48.        Boot without loading device drivers
  49.        Unhide the STACVOL file
  50.        Correct the damaged, unreadable areas of your hard drive
  51.        Correct coincidental damage to the Stacker drive
  52.        
  53.      First, locate file attribute utilities
  54.      This step is not necessary if you are using Stacker 3.1 and MS-
  55.      DOS 6.0.  Otherwise, copy two files, SATTRIB.* and SDIR.*, to the
  56.      \STACKER directory on the uncompressed boot drive.
  57.      
  58.      Clean boot your system
  59.      
  60.      Clean boot your system using a bootable floppy diskette.  "Clean
  61.      boot" means to start your computer without loading any device
  62.      drivers into memory, including Stacker.  Refer to your DOS user's
  63.      guide if you do not have a bootable floppy diskette.  Note:  if
  64.      you use MS-DOS 6, the correct procedure is entitled "Making a
  65.      Startup Disk" on page 178 of the MS-DOS 6 User's Guide.
  66.      
  67.      After clean booting, your computer will display an A prompt.
  68.      Select the appropriate procedure to unhide the STACVOL file:
  69.      
  70.      For MS-DOS 6

  74.      |     attrib -s -h -r drive:\STACVOL.* <ENTER>                    |

  77.      |command unhides all STACVOL files on the specified drive.        |

  80.      For DOS Versions other than MS-DOS 6.0

  82.      |Switch to drive C:, change directory to \STACKER, and type:      |

  84.      |        sdir drive:\STACVOL.* /h <ENTER>                         |
  85.      |                                                                 |
  86.      |where drive is the letter of the drive you are repairing.  This  |
  87.      |command lists STACVOL file(s) which you must unhide individually.|
  88.      |Consider the following sample SDIR output which lists two STACVOL|
  89.      |files:                                                           |

  96.      |The following commands, typed at the command prompt, unhide both |
  97.      |files:                                                           |

  99.      |        sattrib -s -h -r C:\STACVOL.000 <ENTER>                  |
  100.      |        sattrib -s -h -r C:\STACVOL.DSK <ENTER>                  |
  101.      |                                                                 |
  102.      |Repeat this command for each STACVOL file in your SDIR listing.  |

  105.      Run the surface scan on the physical hard drive
  106.      
  107.      1.  Follow the disk repair utility's instructions for running
  108.          from floppy.  Use the most rigorous pattern testing
  109.          available (typically 80-pattern) to scan the physical drive
  110.          containing the STACVOL file, and allow it to repair
  111.          defective areas on the disk.  A rigorous surface scan may
  112.          take several hours, depending on the size and speed of your
  113.          hard drive.
  114.          
  115.          Note:  If you are using Norton CALIBRAT.EXE to perform
  116.          pattern testing, it defaults to low-level formatting.  IDE
  117.          drives cannot be low-level formatted, so you must override
  118.          low-level formatting with the following command:
  119.              
  120.              calibrat /noformat
  121.       
  122.      2.  Remove all diskettes from the floppy drives and restart the
  123.          computer.
  124.         
  125.      Correct coincidental damage to the Stacker drive
  126.      
  127.      1.  Switch to the compressed drive, change to the \STACKER 
  128.          directory, and type: 
  129.         
  130.              check /f <Enter>
  131.  
  132.      2.  When CHECK prompts you to perform a disk surface test,  
  133.          respond "yes."
  134.  
  135.      3.  If CHECK detects errors and prompts you to delete damaged 
  136.          files, respond "yes," then complete the on-screen instructions
  137.          that CHECK displays.
  138.  
  139.      You are ready to run SDEFRAG again.  If the SDEFRAG error persists,
  140.      then complete Procedure II.
  141.  
  142.      PROCEDURE II:  ENABLE DIAGNOSTIC MODE
  143.      
  144.      If the SDEFRAG error persists after completing Procedure I, then
  145.      CHECK /F must be invoked in a special diagnostic mode to detect
  146.      and correct corrupted clusters written to the Stacker drive.
  147.      
  148.      SOLUTION
  149.      
  150.      To detect and correct corrupted clusters on the Stacker drive
  151.        Modify your system configuration to enable diagnostic checking
  152.        Run CHECK /F with the surface scan option
  153.        Run SDEFRAG /R
  154.        Restore your system configuration
  155.        
  156.      Modify your system configuration
  157.      
  158.      Select the appropriate procedure to enable diagnostic checking
  159.      and start your computer without loading any device drivers into
  160.      memory:
  161.  
  162.      For Stacker 3.1
  163.      +-----------------------------------------------------------------+
  164.      |1. Follow the instructions on page 15 of the Stacker 3.1         |
  165.      |   supplement to edit the STACKER.INI file.  Upon entering       |
  166.      |   the editor, your cursor will be positioned at the beginning   | 
  167.      |   of the first line.  From this position, type:                 |

  169.      |             /R <ENTER>                                          |
  170.      |                                                                 |
  171.      |2. Press Ctrl-Z to save the file.                                |
  172.      |                                                                 |
  173.      |3. Reboot your computer.  When MS-DOS displays the following     |

  175.      |             Starting MS-DOS...                                  |
  176.      |                                                                 |
  177.      |   press and release the F5 key, or press and hold down the      |
  178.      |   SHIFT key.                                                    |

  181.      For Stacker Versions prior to 3.1

  183.      |1. Insert the bootable floppy diskette used in Procedure I,      |
  184.      |   "Clean boot your system," into drive A.  Switch to the root   |
  185.      |   directory of drive C, and copy the file CONFIG.SYS to the     |
  186.      |   floppy:                                                       |
  187.      |                                                                 |
  188.      |             copy config.sys a: <ENTER>                          |
  189.      |                                                                 |
  190.      |2. Use a text editor to modify the CONFIG.SYS file on the A      |
  191.      |   drive.  Remark all device drivers and programs other than     |
  192.      |   STACKER.COM and SSWAP.COM.  Add the /R switch to the end      |
  193.      |   of the STACKER.COM statement.  The following example          |
  194.      |   illustrates a typical CONFIG.SYS file with modifications:     |
  195.      |                                                                 |

  197.      |      files=30                                                   |

  207.      |3. After you have made the appropriate modifications to your     |
  208.      |   CONFIG.SYS file, save it to the A drive, then restart your    |
  209.      |   computer.                                           |

  212.      Run CHECK /F with the surface scan option
  213.      
  214.      1.  Switch to the compressed drive, change to the \STACKER 
  215.          directory, and type: 
  216.         
  217.              check /f <Enter>
  218.  
  219.      2.  When CHECK prompts you to perform a disk surface test,  
  220.          respond "yes."
  221.  
  222.      3.  If CHECK detects errors and prompts you to delete damaged 
  223.          files, respond "yes."  Complete the on-screen instructions
  224.          that CHECK displays, and continue with step 4. 
  225.  
  226.      4.  From the \STACKER directory, type:
  227.  
  228.              sdefrag /r <Enter> 
  229.              
  230.          If the SDEFRAG error persists, then complete step 5.  Otherwise       
  231.          your system is fully optimized and you can restore its original
  232.          configuration (see next section, "Restore your system 
  233.          configuration.")
  234.  
  235.      5.  If the SDEFRAG error persists, then switch to your computer's
  236.          slower CPU speed (i.e., press the TURBO button) and run SDEFRAG
  237.          again.
  238.  
  239.      6.  If your computer does not have a secondary CPU speed, or if the
  240.          error persists after running SDEFRAG at the slower CPU speed, 
  241.          then select the appropriate procedure to reduce the amount of 
  242.          memory available to SDEFRAG:
  243.  
  244.      For Stacker 3.1
  245.      +-----------------------------------------------------------------+
  246.      |1. Repeat the STACKER.INI editing procedure (page 15 of the      |
  247.      |   Stacker 3.1 supplement).  Upon entering the editor, your      |

  267.      |   drive.  Add the switches /C=32 and /F=512 to the end of the   |
  268.      |   STACKER.COM statement.  For example:                          |

  272.      |2. Save the CONFIG.SYS file to the A drive, then restart your    |
  273.      |   computer.                                                     |

  277.      7.  After reducing the amount of memory available to SDEFRAG, change
  278.        to the \STACKER directory on your compressed drive and type:
  279.  
  280.         sdefrag /r <Enter>

  283.      Restore your system configuration
  284.      
  285.      If you use Stacker 3.1 with MS-DOS 6.0, then repeat the editing
  286.      procedure to remove the /R switch from the STACKER.INI file, and
  287.      restart your computer.  For versions of Stacker prior to 3.1,
  288.      remove the bootable floppy diskette from drive A and restart your
  289.      computer.
